DESIGN STATEMENT

In John Proctor Is the Villain, Kimberly Belflower responds to The Crucible by Arthur Miller, reimagining and recontextualizing its themes through a contemporary lens shaped by toxic masculinity, sexual abuse and harassment, and systemic power inequities.

The design situates the audience within a hyperrealistic public high school classroom, using this familiar environment to investigate the lingering structures of control and silence. Seen through the perspective of teenagers in dialogue, the classroom becomes an apparently safe space that gradually reveals its underlying tensions, exposing the complexities of voice, power, and vulnerability.
